Are you heading to the ocean this summer? Vacation season is upon us, and a lot of people will be heading to the shore for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Of course, it's not all R&R. A lot of people are also bringing along their stand up paddle boards. You may be doing the same. Perhaps you're thinking about bringing your SUP rower along, too.

More people are discovering the fun of turning their SUP into a SUP rower. With an innovative attachment and a pair of SUP oars, you can row anywhere you paddle board, and then some. This includes the ocean. But before you head into open water with your SUP rower, there are a few things you want to keep in mind.

Make It a Group Activity

This tip applies to any activity in and on the ocean. It comes back to the buddy system. Whenever you go swimming in the ocean or go out paddleboarding or rowing, try to bring at least one other person. In addition to being even more fun, it'll help everyone stay safe and aware of their surroundings. Whether you go SUP rowing with a friend or in a group (SUP rowing can be a great family activity!), you can all enjoy an afternoon on the water and safely explore everything the shoreline has to offer.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Rip Currents

When it comes to paddleboarding and SUP rowing, a lot of people head out to just beyond the surf break, where the water is a little deeper and may appear calmer. However, this is where rip currents can lurk. Rip currents can be hard to see when you're on the water, even more so when you're low to the water.

If you notice a spot on the water that looks calmer or darker than the surrounding water, stay away. That said, should you get caught in a rip current (it pulls you away from shore), stay calm and use each crew oar to shift your SUP rower so it's parallel to the shore. Start rowing until the waters start to feel more navigable. When you notice you're no longer being pulled out, you can row back to shore or wherever you were headed. Of course, it's a great idea to wear a life jacket anytime you're out on the water.

Choppier Waters? Not a Problem

Unlike the rivers and lakes you're used to, the open ocean can be choppier and have swirling currents you're not expecting. But don't worry! A SUP rower can be a great way to experience the ocean, even when it gets a little choppy. Thanks to their stability and lower center of gravity, SUP rowers can handle more challenging waters than a stand up paddle board alone.

You might go paddleboarding in the morning and rowing in the afternoon. Bringing along a SUP rower attachment and a rowing oar pair can help you get more use out of your paddle board. You don't have to call it a day when you're paddleboarding and it gets a bit breezy or choppy. You can simply attach your SUP rower and keep the adventure going!
